Since 2009, SDC has supported NASA’s Orion spacecraft development in a number of different roles, providing services that range from materials characterization to large hardware manufacture and structural acceptance testing. In 2017, SDC completed the first shipments of Orion Launch Abort System hardware to be used in Exploration Mission 1 – the uncrewed first flight of the new Space Launch System rocket and Orion. In addition to flight program support, SDC and NASA have collaborated on a number of research and development programs, the breadth of which includes development of structural health monitoring (SHM) algorithms, additive manufacturing of space-borne structures, and deployable, inflatable structures. SDC’s contributions support of NASA’s objective of increasing exploratory mission capabilities and increasing the range of manned space flight missions.
